Big debate tonight

There's a dog we've been looking at on the Internet.  Needs a home.  Big melt-your-heart eyes.  Would make the kids ridiculously happy.

But dogs cause problems and make mess and noise and trouble too from time to time.

We like dogs.  Both of us had a dog growing up.

Big commitment.

The debate goes on.

We got our dog as an estimated five year old from the Lost Dogs Home in North Melbourne - I saw her on the internet too!

Thus we avoided all the puppy problems, and, though I've got no idea if this is typical or not, she doesn't really cause problems or make mess, noise or trouble, so long as we don't put meat or fruit scraps in the kitchen bin or she'll be into it overnight. But since she usually eats our meat scraps (but not cooked bones) with her dinner, she actually reduces the potential for the bin to smell before it's full, so the little bit of extra effort we have to go to is compensated for anyway.

She is a big commitment though, but she's been well worth it.

Yeah, this dog is 2 years old, house-trained and can sit and stay. So over the worst of the puppy problems too. We're pretty tempted and the kids are drawing pictures of the dog and leaving notes for us to remind us they want the dog! I think I'm getting worn down...

We're converts to the "adopt an older dog" camp here. Our pugs have been pretty good...although, like Caroline's dog, one of ours likes to get into the kitchen bin if we leave it even the slightest bit open. But they have been pretty well trained, and have lost a lot of the puppy energy, so not having to worry about those things has been great.
Don't get me started on the amount of hair they leave around though....
