Meet the Superhumans

Kudos for the people behind the making of this ad.  Made me want to stand up and cheer. Gutsy.

That is a pretty cool ad. I'm not entirely convinced with the use of the term "superhuman" though? Can't really explain why that is so I will get back to you on a reason if my thinking becomes any clearer...

I know what you mean. I did think about that term a little too - does it have implications that they are "not like us" or "not normal"? But I settled on the idea that the athletes themselves were comfortable enough to take part in it (I think it was an ad as part of a longer series called "Meet the Superhumans" which showcased the English paralympians and their stories on Channel4) and so I figured if they were okay with it then it was probably okay.

What I really liked was the fact that the ad didn't take the traditional approach of arousing our sympathy for people who have overcome terrible hardship. Instead they chose to portray them as incredibly tough competitors to be admired. I'm not saying the first option isn't ever valid but it's kind of the standard response to paralympians and it's nice to see the boundaries pushed beyond that.

Yes, I think you've put it into words pretty well. And I do agree that it's good to see them shown as competitive athletes overcoming adversity rather than the traditional media portrayals of people with disabilities as being sufferers or victims. So on those grounds, perhaps the use of the term superhuman isn't such a bad choice...I was trying to think of a better one, but I couldn't really come up with anything....
